I need help. I belong to that other group but am trying to get closer to LH standards. You guys are a wealth of knowledge and I love this site. My question is what would be appropriate pants to wear to fight in during the early 1400's. Would it be braise and chauses or would something else be more correct. The country of origin is lowlands Scotland. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Lowland Scots would be wearing much the same as the rest of 'civilised' europe .. breeches, hose & doublet. If you goods were wortth more than 20 marks you'd be expected to have a Jack with sleeves to the hand, or else a pair of splints, a sallet, sword and buckler, bow & sheaf of arrows.
(the equipment is the requirement as enacted by Parliament 1456)

Cheers
Dave

thanks for the reply Dave. Are the hose that you are refering to of the one piece style or more of the split style(closer to chauses).

Thanks, Rob

I must have been half asleep when I read the original post (not big change there for me) thought you'd said 1470's not 1400's. Still not too serious a gaff ... just I could have got a 1420's description of the lowland Scottish Soldier.

Anyway, for c.1400 I'd expect single leg hose would be more typical. But you wouldn't be far wrong basing it on French and Flemish illustrations in Mss from the period. There would have been stylistic differences but not so much as you'd easily be able to pick up.

Cheers
Dave
