Well, my 14th century aspirations are slightly on hold. A local(ish) group does WotR (c 1475) and I can't resist.

But I'm a larger fellow... those doublets and hose will look slightly ridiculous on me. Any ideas of historically correct clothing that would be a bit more flattering?

As far as the 1470's go, doublets and hosen were the standard for the middle and upper classes, with variations of cut and sleeves depending on where you lived (England,Italy, and the German States).Keep in mind that you would wear a garmet over your doublet, the length of it varies, worn close fitting by the younger men, somewhat looser and longer for the older gents(myself included). What type of portrayal did you have in mind?

Well, I'm looking to do a relatively well-off professional archer. As I understand it, it was not uncommon for youngest sons of minor manorial families to serve as archers for powerful magnates (some 15% of Ruchard II's 300 strong archer guard were from manorial families).

I'm hoping to wear something like a mid-thigh length gown over the doublet, though that sounds incredibly hot to wear in the summer.

You may want to consider a doublet made from linen, or a lighter weight wool material. Not sure how historically correct linen doublets would be though, someone with more knowledge may be able to answer that one.Another option is wearing a pourpoint doublet (a type worn under armour). Then you can keep your "Sunday-go-to-meetin" doublet nice and clean.

Charlotte here...

You're best off with sticking with lightweight wool instead of linen. I've worn both in hot summer months, and not found the wool to be any warmer than the linen. In fact, if you get a sturdy linen, the linen can be quite warm.

The most important thing is to have a layer of linen next to your skin, as your shirt. This will keep you cooler and comfortable.

Historically speaking, wool is almost always the better choice for your non-underwear clothing.

As far as your stature, a gown would be good idea. Shorter, no fur, lighter wool will keep it cooler. Also go for a lighter color. Most of the illustrations show people in only their doublets when they are actually working, so wearing a gown the rest of the time should be appropriate.

For your archer portrayal, I'd defer more to the military folks, but I think you'd want some sort of arming doublet or padded jack. I believe that it's appropriate for these military garments to be linen (though a jack can be many many layers, worn over another doublet, and wouldn't be cool at all!)

Cheers,
Charlotte

ya what char/jeff said

doublet/hosen with a gown. theres also a smock like gown that has no sleeves that servants or household workers seem to wear over their doublets

and what kinda stocky we talkin about. i'm about 5ft 9 and 215. flonzy is like 6ft 5 and 280 so i think you'll be ok. as far as looks go. hosen actually makes the legs look thinner if u can believe that

which 15thc group you gonna paly with? anywhere close to teh dc area?
