Does anybody know of a good (and hopefully not too expensive) source for fustian fabric? I would naturally (living in Europe) prefer a European source, but that seems to be on the verge of the impossible.

Thanks

Sebastian

I don't know of any European sources specifically, Sebastian, but try looking for cotton/linen blends instead of the word "fustian" and you may have better luck.

Well,

the German word for fustian is "Arabische Baumwolle" which translates as "Arabian Cotton". There is also the word "Barchent" for it, but there does not seem to be anybody around that manufactures or sells it. It sometimes seems silly, but a lot of the high quality supplies one needs for LH are harder to come by and more expensive here in Europe than they seem to be in the states.

Regards

Sebastian

hey all from Anne-Marie
http://www.fabrics-store.com/ often has cotton linen blends for pretty cheap. Cheap enough that it might offset any shipping costs overseas? I know they ship UPS to US and Canada.

RIght now, for example, they have about 16 different ones (only about five are re-enactment useful to my mind), ranging from $3 to $6 a yard. (USD)

hope this is somewhat helpful...

Which of these would you consider useful for re-enactment?

*blush*. me? you ask me about fabric?
Gwen or just about anyone else here probably knows more than I do about such things, but I tend to figure prints are right out to start with.

for the rest, I would assume that the weight will depend on what you want it for.

Gwen and Co can likely give you a better idea of which weight is good for what, and the appropriateness of the woven stripes, which colors, etc.

sorry I couldnt be more help...

No problem AM. What I want it for is for an arming coat for my new harness. Anyone who can chime in with advice, it would be appreciated. I can sew very well, and I know a lot about proper colors and proper design/shapes. Where I am weak is proper fabric weights.

Thanks in advance,

hey from Anne-Marie

one nice thing about fabrics-store.com is that they'll send you swatches. I have a nice little collection of the different weights I can refer to before I order.

hope this helps

fustian was normally made with a linen warp and cotton weft. so you had two different fibers criss crossing each other. with modern linen/cotton blends, it's just that, a blend of both fibers into one strand. so in actuallity you have both linen and cotton composing the warp and the weft instead of them being separate. plus i believe that there was a sheared nap on the fabric itself. can someone else chime in on this point.

are you bent on using fustian? can you use some other mat. instead?

have fun,

daniel

Thanks for all the help so far.

Anne Marie, the problem with fabrics store is that shipping kills any savings one may make when ordering from overseas. They ship with a private shipping express, and shipping on 40 yards of linen is 170$, effectively doubling the price.

Daniel, It does not really "have to" be Fustian, I have used and like using wool and linen, but I would really prefer to try out how I like it. I have heard so many good things about the way it feels on your skin and how it handles that I would really like to find a source for it. And Linen (at least the sources I have found here in Germany so far) is quite a bit more expensive here than at some of the stores in the states.

Thanks

Sebastian
