One of our people contacted John Howe about this after seeing him in a 15th century photo setting playing cards. This is Gerry Embleton's "Medieval Soldier" book.

From memory I think John's reply was that there were no surviving 14th century ones or any other evidence that would provide us with enough basis to confidently make a set of our own. I did a web search earlier this year for any commercial producers but couldn't find any.

Thanks for the reminder on this. If anybody else on this forum could provide information on this topic that would be great as this is on our list of things to get as well.

The Cloisters in New York has a deck of Burgundian playing cards from the late 15th century, and I believe that you can view them on their website.I've been looking for a deck myself on the web but haven't had much luck.

The cards which John Howe and friends are using in "Medieval Military Costume" are a set made by Marianne Hansen of "Billy and Charlie" fame. I bought a set of these from her at Pennsic some years ago, but I think she does not produce them any more. She did a fair amount of woodcut work before turning to pewter casting, but I don't know if she has access to a press these days, or if she is interested in selling her prints any more.

The deck she created was her own design, incorporating elements from some surviving late-15th century cards. The deck in the book has been hand painted.

There is also a commercially made deck that is a copy of the 15th c. Visconti Sforza deck. I have a deck that is brand new in plastic wrap. I'm afraid that I don't remember where I got it, but it is published by US Game Systems, Inc Stamford CT 06902 USA.

Hi All -

I found this while surfing tonight:

Card merchant

Not much use for 14th C., but they have a (supposedly) 15th C. tarot deck.
