on 14th century lighting...check out the Museum of London "The Medieval Household" book. Theres lots of pictures of lamps, lanterns, etc. Theres even pictures of broken baluster mugs that had been converted to a lantern/candle holder (I can attest this works great! the handle means you can carry it to the bathroom in the middle of the night with ease ) just say no to IKEA candle lanterns! --Anne-Marie -------------------- "Let Good Come of It"

Thanks Ann-Marie, Do you happen to know the ISBN? I love the MOL books, I'll try to find this one to add to my collection. -Matt

Having just spent a week in a 14th century encampment, we worked over the _The Medieval Household_ ISBN 0-11-290490-4 for lighting sources. I have completed the brass lantern on page 150. It worked well. We also have the oil lamps from page 127 with wire hangers from page 132. They work well in light winds even, outside of a tent. Another holder used, but not in the book is a wooden X with four candles on spikes over shallow metal cups to catch the wax. This makes great 'chandeliers' for inside a tent.We systematically burned what came to hand in the oil lamps, in an attempt to find a good wick source. The best by far is the eight strand finger braided cord using cotton thread. [ 07-07-2002: Message edited by: Woodcrafter ] -------------------- Woodcrafter 14th c. Woodworking
