People interested in early woodworking might like to look at the article about Robin Wood in the current (Feb. 2002) issue of Woodwork magazine, which seems to be available at most Borders’ and Barnes & Noble.

Robin Wood is an English wood turner who makes reproductions of early wooden dishes using the traditional springpole lathe. The article is brief but well-illustrated with photos of Wood making a lathe from oak logs, and with a few pictures of his wares including 15th-century german dishes and bowls copied from examples found on the Mary Rose. He also discusses the lathe chisels he forged himself. His low-tech approach to his work is very interesting - it is even lower-tech than I suspected. Definitely worth a look.
