I think that's what it's called. Basically a Smurf hat. Does anyone know the time period on one of these? what were they made of? leather? felt?

I've never seen one in a period source, I just want to wear one

They are relatively early, not sure of the exact range of dates/places, but try Saxon/Hastings/etc. I think they were wool, but I've never looked into it....

These go back to ancient times. There is a golden Scythian cup (from 200 BC?) That shows an archer wearing what looks like a Phrygian cap.

Hmmm...I was hoping someone had a reference for something closer to 1300. I suppose I could just make one for display purposes. Does anyone have a pattern?

I did a search and came up with a few things.

It did appear in the 12th century
12th Century hats

And a helmet version from the Hellenistic period (I think)

There are more pictures on this page Thracian Armour

So it looks as though I can make a medieval Phrygian cap, but it's a century too early. I guess I'll have to wait for a Ren Fair to wear it.

This is what I came up with after playing around with a yard of wool for a few days.

I was shooting for something like this http://www.geocities.com/aenor_anjou/pcgoef_s.jpg

I'd appreciate any constructive criticism.

Hi Saverio,

I don't know that I'm qualified to voice an opinion. I think the falling forward bit might be a tad fuller, but now I cant see the pic - I think it has to do with your webhost.
