I have some nice medium blue linen that I bought to make into a tunic (that doesn't sound like the right term to me - goune, perhaps?). I located some linen thread that appeared to be close in color, but when it arrived it feels far too heavy to me, at least compared to modern threads.

It is described as "two-ply" waxed linen. Is this suitable for hand sewing?

well, you can get 2-ply linen thread in various thicknesses. i've got a spool of 2-ply unwaxed handspun that is fine enough for handkerchief linen, another spool for medium weight stuff (this is similar in thickness to the mercerized cotton thread found in abundance in the fabric stores), and some waxed heavy duty stuff for sewing leather and such. i've never seen pre-waxed linen thread sold as sewing thread (not for sewing medium-weight fabric, at least). do you have a fine ruler or calipers to measure the thickness? look at the threads in the fabric....is the thread a lot thicker, like will it stand out terribly from the fabric?
