This is continuing a topic which began in the Off-topic category, and seems to be veering more on-topic, so I thought I'd stick it here...

dogs at feasts....

Anyway, I have no knowledge whatsoever about medieval dogs, but I do have handy this image:
which I unfortunately do not at the immediate moment have the references for (but I can scrounge them up at home if I remember). IIRC, this was supposed to be a picture of the evils of gluttony or excessive partying or something of that nature, so perhaps the presence of two dogs, one gnawing on a bone, should be taken with a grain of salt. Not that excessive partying didn't take place, I'm sure....

Nikki - if you could post the reference to that picture I'd be grateful. I'd like to add it into my survey.

I've found some other examples of dogs shown while people are eating but it is certainly not seen the majority of the time. Here are links to some examples I have found. They seem to be smaller dogs and puppies. There are also several cats and birds to be found, oh, and one deer. The birds and deer seem alegorical in thier contexts.

I don't have my notes with me, but I think (only about 60% certainty, here) that I scanned it out of _Medieval Book of Seasons_ by Collins and Davis. Unfortunately, I don't own the book, but I wouldn't be surprised if others on this board did, and could give you a faster verification than I.

It might be a while before I manage to find my notes, I'm trying to finish a paper for my phd qualifying exams this week...ick.
