I’ve been mulling over women’s headcoverings again, and have gone back to the "Flemish hood" thread from May. (http://www.darkharvest.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000026.html) This time I’m more interested in working on the white hood/coifs than the colored hoods. Rather than construction, my purpose this time is more in determining some regional styles for women’s informal headcoverings.

Looking over my own research and that provided in the aforementioned thread, I am satisfied that the “turban” coif RedCo. women wear is suitable for a German / Flemish portrayal.

Italian women appear to wear a smaller version of the German turban. The stylistic difference is a veil-like piece hanging down which gives more neck coverage.

It appears as though the white “hood” with ties up over the top that appears here http://www.liripipe.com/maisnie/ and http://www.mit.edu/~nprive/whitehood.JPG (this is later, probably around 1500 judging by style of the gown, but the headcovering is virtually the same) is most suitable for a Flemish / French / Burgundian portrayal.

So what is appropriate for English women? I realized I don’t have a single visual reference for English.

Can anyone help?

I will rifle through the books when I get home and find some that I like and we can figure out if it is "frumpy" or "fashionable" for the 1470s.

Well, the vast, echoing silence may be due at least in part to no one having a good idea...I know I haven't had much luck in finding many illustrations from England. Archaeological finds, sure, rafts of them, but not pictures. I can't think offhand of a single illustration of lower-classes from England. Most everything that I've found have been French or Burgundian (I've been avoiding using Italian sources, they seem to be very different).

re: the flemish headdress....I may have mentioned it elsewhere, but in my travels I found a great painting clearly showing the headdress and how it works, INCLUDING THE COIF SHE"S WEARING UNDER IT!!!!! I'll try and scan it in at some point.

also, I got to look at a van der Weyden up close and personal (and only set off the security alamrs a couple times....) and now have evidence of how the end of a braid is fastened....at least in this one picutre, it seems to be colored cord with beads on the end!

neat, eh?

Uh... *cough* *hack* another flu victim bites the dust.

I got in from California at 3am (unintentional red-eye aircraft with gremlin infestations prevented me from getting home earlier). Had a good class week out in Ojai (that's O-HI).

As I have been promising, I will search the books and post some images of the head coverings I am thinking of.
