Hi All,Antoinne is indeed Philip the goods son. I don't have ready accessd to a full biography, but I have learned a few things reading Vaughn recently. His mother was a noblewoman, I believe - I need to look it up.
Firstly, the appelation "Grand Bastard" - this is erroneous, and made up by de Commynes. His official title was 'bastard' of Philip (like many others - phillip had enough bastards to man a squadron of horse), he was the Comte de Roche, a member of the Toisson d'Or from almost it's inception. For the Period of 1476 - Jan 1477 he was aMarshal of Burgundy, or acting as one. Jean de Rubempre was the actual constable in charge of the Field Army.
Antoinne was amongst a number of members of the Toisson d'Or who was reprimanded by his brother, Charles the Bold during the two chapter meetings held during Charles reign - for "excessive liberality, infidelity to his wife, and making promises and not keeping them" - which doesn't make him a bad guy, but points to his human failings.
Antoinne was often trusted to conduct diplomatic missions to foriegn dignitaries - he spent some time in the Spring of 1475 arranging or reafirming an alliance with the Dutchy of Milan.
During the invasion of Burgundy in the Spring of 1477 following Charles death, he submitted himself to Louis XI in order to maintain his lordship and lands of Roche.
He was involved as a combatant in the war with Ghent 1452 - 1453, again during the War of Public Weal 1465, and was present and fought in Charles campaigns against the Leuge of Constance 1476 - 1477. He was sent on a diplomatic mission to secure the final details of the marriage of Charles to Margaret of York during 1467, when he had his famous tournament with Lord Scales (which seems to have been a cover for the secret diplomacy being conducted). From a contemporary description of the tournament, we know Antoinne was near-sighted (but this did not keep him from pursuing martial endevours). He had a place of prominence during the wedding and ensuing tournament celebrating Charles & Margarets marriage.
He died in 1504.
