A joke? It most certainly is not! This is serious scholarship.

Hi Sean,

You don't understand - all this modern scholarship is fundamentaly incorrect regarding the so-called "German School" of fighting. These manuals are not fighing manuals at all - to understand them properly, you have to understand the German sense of Humour.

They are books of practical jokes to be enjoyed of a quiet evening amongst friends - you know, the "Ho Ho Ho! Hanz'' ear iz off in ze corner!" gag, and the ever popular "look, Ve haff dizlocated Joachims shoulder, Ha Ha!".

Only once we truely understand the sublime humour behind them, will the true mysteries of the joke or gag books be revealed.

Exactly!
Here is an example from the manual in question....

How to manfully and skillfully defend yourself against the single sword.

At some time of bad luck, you may find yourself caught within a large crowd of evil men, and they may seek to do you some harm. It may chance that one among them is large and of great strength and carriage, and he will no-doubt wield a sword of great size that he will swing through the air, making sounds designed to fill a coward's heart with fear and trembling. This is not to be feared, for when this giant cuts the air in this useless fashion with his sword, you have simply to draw your handgonne and shoot him straightaway. After he falls, step upon his teeth with the Green Boot.

Now THAT is martial excellence!!
