Jeffrey Hedgecock will be the guest armourer at the Royal Armouries, Leeds on Thursday, 3/31, Friday, 4/1 and Saturday, 4/2. He will be demonstrating several different armouring techniques, including raising a helmet, fabrication of limbs and various armouring techniques, as well as answering questions. Those of you in the UK are invited to come by the armouring shop to say hi and have a chat! Jeff will also be jousting in the team jousts Friday 3/25-Monday, 3/28. He's part of a 3-man team called "The Order of the Crescent" lead by champion jouster Toby Capwell, ably assisted by Steve Mallett. If you're planning to be in the UK for Easter, please come to the jousts and cheer them on! Gwen [ 03-08-2005: Message edited by: Ginevra ]

quick question Gwen,i was listening to NPR this morning and they had a segment about a new "international" joust put on by the English Heritage: inviting jousters from around the world, the english defending their honour, next great hit next to soccer, etc. is this the same event that Jeff will be tilting at? Jeff tracked down the story on the NPR site here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4533121 These are clearly -not- the "first jousts held in half a millenia." That's just marketing hype. Some of our friends are participating in the English Heritage jousts, but Jeff isn't, even though his dance card is quite full. The first tournament Jeff is jousting in is the Easter /team jousts for the Sword of Honour. There will be 4 teams participating: Joram van Essen will captain the Burgundian team, Dominic Sewell will captain the Destrier team, Toby Capwell will captain The Order of the Crescent (the team Jeff is on) and a "home" Armouries team. Jeff has also been invited to participate in a series of jousts sponsored by the Royal Armouries (NOT English Heritage) in July in Scotland. These are individual jousts (meaning each man competes for himself, there are no teams). Jeff has also been invited to participate in the joust for the Queen's Jubilee Horn in August. This is also an individual event and if I'm not mistaken, Joram is the current Champion. There is some more info on Royal Armouries events here: http://www.royalarmourieslive.com/ There's a lot of interest in jousting in Europe right now, which is why English Heritage is jumping on the bandwagon with some new jousts of their own. A small correction...Joram was the individual Champ in '03, but Steven Charlton of the Armouries won the individual title at last August's tournament. Cheers, JH

To be fair, the "millenia" statement was made by the marketing boob from English Heritage, -not- the NPR interviewer. It's the same boob who made the statement about the participants being "car mechanics and the like, schooled by English Heritage over the last 10 years to joust". Ok, if that's so, then he's just contradicted himself about these being the first jousts in half a millenia, hasn't he? I also happen to know the likes of people such as Graham Turner (the famous artist) and William West, owner of the Englyshe Plate Armourie, as well as professional actor and horseman Steve Mallett have been signed for the series. I bet they would -love- to know they've been characterized as "car mechanics". Oy. Gwen
