Where are you located? There are many different jousting groups you could be directed to with that information.

Hello Alexandra, I'm also a Lusitano and Spanish horse owner who trains horses for joust, based in Ireland (where people also havn't a clue about what we're doing). The Iberian horses are "hot", but take to jousting with enthusiasm when properly trained. There are plenty of jousting groups in the UK, but you won't find them via the BHS. I can give you some contacts if you'd like to hook up with people in your area. Where are you based? Regards, Macha

Hi, I'll see who I can find in your neck of the woods and get them to contact you. As far as training your horse, there's no reason why you can't start with the basics yourself, 'though of course you'll need another looney to joust against for all the actual passes. The main thing the horses need to learn is to keep going straight, keep as close to the central barrier (or wall, which is what you'll be using to start) as you're comfortable with, and get used to passing other horses without veering. They also need to get used to things passing and being held close to their heads and over the top of their heads (this is the lance which should be held in your right hand/arm and pass over the horses neck to be carried by his left ear/eye). Getting him used to flags would also be a good idea, as well as strange, cloaky bits of clothing, not to mention the noise of mail and armour, all of which can freak horses out when they first encounter them. Still, compared to learning to stay on the bit and do complicated, sidewaysy things it's easy!

Hello,

There is a very well established jousting society in Nottingham, if that is not too far away (You said all the ones you have found are in the South, but I suppose East Anglia is not all that much better!)

If you wanted to try jousting, you could maybe catch a train, but you might have problems if you had to bring your horse down every time, if you joined.

The contact email for the 'Nottingham Jousting Association' is mr.humphrey@ntlworld.com and the phone number is 01509 852366.

If it is not possible to try jousting there, you might always be able to get information about other groups (in the North) from them.

Hello Alexandra,

I don't actually joust, but I am a student at Nottingham and was considering joining the local jousting society, before I was seduced by the Uni (Anglo-Norman) living history society. (Albini Household).

Jousting looks like great fun, and I would personally really like to give it a go, but I am too poor to own a horse and so I'll have to wait till I graduate and get a job.

They say you are crazy as they have no imagination (or perhaps they are not sufficiently divorced from reality!)

Are you a Tancred? Kind of a famous Norman name, I suppose.
