Here's a question....

On the UK Living History forum, someone has brought up the question of what was it that killed the Black Prince - whilst in France, he apparentl contracts a fatal disease, but then takes about six years to die. He was apparently still mentally active, but unable to walk without crutches. Does anyone hae any idea what killed him?

According to David Greene in his new book 'The Black Prince', Edward began to succumb to illness, around the time of Najera; and that this illness is diagnosed to be either dropsy or amoebic dysentry. He states this as being uncertain however.

At the time, his army is also recorded as suffering from dysentry and probably malaria, as well as a shortage of supplies.

dysentry is very communal, so if his army had it, so too would you expect him to. But, to last that long after? that sounds more like malaria - but i really dont know the specifics of either. Perhaps if you found a medical textbook, you could see which of the three ailments fits his wasting disease best.

Hope this helps.

It would be interesting for a medical professional to 'diagnose' the disease based on the varied descriptions. The only thing I really recall in terms of details on his death was that he bled from 'within' near the end.

Sounds nasty, whatever it was.
