My wife got this on her poetry list -serve:Tolkien Beowulf Found Wheaton College professor Michael Drout discovered 2000 pages of handwritten material by J.R.R. Tolkien in a box of papers at Oxford's Bodleian Library. He says, "I started looking through, and realised I had found an entire book of material that had never seen the light of day. As I turned the page, there was Tolkien's fingerprint in a smudge of ink." Drout has already published a version of a Tolkien lecture, BEOWULF AND THE CRITICS, with the permission of the estate. Next summer, Tolkien's own translation of Beowulf, accompanied by line-by-line interpretation of its meaning, will also be published. Merlin Unwin, son of the Tolkien's first publisher, observes, "Beowulf is a wonderful story, and if you put Tolkien's name to it, it would probably be a great commercial success."

Sorry, I am coming to this a little bit late, but I for one would love to see Tolkien's take on Beowulf. Many people do not realize that he was one of the foremost Old English and Middle English language scholars of the 20th century.Angelique -------------------- Dahlin', this can't be real emergency, I only brought one bottle of bourbon and one bottle of Tabasco...
