Hi All-

We're plotting out our trip to England in April, and here is our tentative itinerary. We would very much appreciate any comments from seasoned travellers and residents as to how doable this is, suggestions, comments, etc. Nothing is written in stone right now except that we arrive, my friend Michael picks us up at the airport, we look around London for a few hours and then drive to Dover. After we leave Dover anything is changeable.

I have an almost pathological fascination with dead people and will look at tombs for days, so suggestions where to see cool tombs would be appreciated. This is our first trip to England so suggestions for almost anything else that we shouldn't miss would also be appreciated.

We would love to meet some of you we've met here on the list, so if you're agreeable please speak up and let us know where we can meet up!

Thanks!

Gwen and Jeff

one month earlier and you'd be in warwick for this years pre-season market...

and i must note that is a punishing schedule, i could plan days at each location......

How are you travelling, cos i realise you US guys are used to a big country, but the roads here can be shocking, and the rail is a nightmare... if you are planning for trains can I suggest this site,(http://www.qjump.co.uk/home/index.html) as it provides good up to date info.

BTW if you want somewhere to stay in Southampton I MAY be able to assist!

Hi Caliburnus-

We'll be travelling by car, having been warned off the rail system. My friend Michael lives in Germany and travels frequently in England, so he "knows the ropes" so to speak. He'll be flying in a day before us, hiring a car and then picking us up at Heathrow. He's agreed to act as chauffer so we can gawk instead of drive.

The schedule does seem a bit grueling, doesn't it..... I suppose we'll have to trim it back.

Thanks for the offer of accomodations. I don't see we'll need any but we'd love to meet up somewhere for a beer as Jeff is looking forward to trying out some of that famous English stuff of yours!

There a several good watering holes within a stones throw of my front door! and may god ales to sample.....
BTW, Southampton has some C.14th walls that are very impressive, at that time of year they run tours for an hour or so, ending up in THE Red Lion Pub, Made famous in Henry V, its a wonderful atmospheric place

(from pub, to walls and back to pub in one post, i'm pleased...)

If you can spare any time to come to Scotland, I'd be more than happy to show you around the Capital!
However, a word of warning though, for wherever you go: Some seemingly kindly soul may try to buy you something called Theakstons Olde Peculiar. For the unwary, can I recommend trying a half-pint first? Either that or watch your guts empty down the toilet about half-an-hour later....

Caliburnus, we'd still like to meet up with you and Meg if you're agreeable, please let me know if you'll be about Easter weekend.

Alan, I'm afraid there's no time for Scotland this trip, but we'll certainly take you up on your kind offer next time around. Toby has offered to show us his new domain, so I'm sure we'll find the time to head north next trip!

If I've missed someone, please accept my apologies as there's lots going on here and I'm a bit twitterpated. If we're in your neighborhood and you'd like to show some silly American tourists the wonders of your home town, please feel free to email me direct at gwen@historicenterprises.com. We're hoping to get off the tourist path a bit and see at least some of the less well known but no less fascinating places.
