One of my long-term collections is of obscure Christmas music, especially early music. So I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations of recordings that you particularly like. Most of my collection is on vinyl scavenged from library sales (if any of you are in the greater Washington DC area, check out the Wheaton Library book sale, open 7 days a week, which is *huge* and *cheap*, and their spin-off Friends of the Library store in nearby Wheaton Plaza. The vinyl lives in the Wheaton Plaza store because they got so many donations that it was creating a fire hazard. They don't usually have many medieval history books, but i usually find at least 10 other books that I want, and I can get them all for around $10.), but I'm branching out into cd's now too.Albums that I own and would recommend are: Taverner Consort's The Carol Album - 7 Centuries of Christmas Music, where they seem to have made efforts to reproduce songs in their original form. Cambridge Singers, Christmas Night- Carols of the Nativity, which are probably arranged by Rutter for the choral form, but they are just exquisite. Maggie Sansone & Ensemble Galilei, Ancient Noëls, purely instrumental arrangements of traditional carols and dances ranging in date from the 15th to 20th centuries, all with hammered dulcimer & a mix of random other instruments. Probably not terribly historical arrangements, but nice.

I will have to do a more thorough search when I get home this afternoon. One of my favs is:Thys Yool LionHeart did a wonderful show at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Purely vocal. It was Amazing. If I can find the title that is related to the show, I will post it. We have a few others. I will have to scratch through our CD collection.

(I'm no musicologist, so please forgive me if I can't say if any of these are correctly historical or if they are done in the proper historical manner. I only know what I like and what the package says! Gwen)"Christmas Music from Medieval and Renaissance Europe" The Sixteen / Harry Christopher, conductor Contains lots of wonderful Latin stuff, and includes some better-known pieces such as the Coventry Carol and Boar's Head Carol. "On Yoolis Night, Medieval carols and motets" Anonymous 4 This is acapella, and if you love the sound of soaring women's voices, this collection is for you. "All on a Christmas Morning" Aegnus From the package: "From Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, Brittany & America, Jimmy Keane and Robbie O'Connell have gathered a merry mix of tunes, songs and carols to celebrate a Celtic Christmas." One of my favorite Christmas CDs. This contains the heartbreaking song "Christmas in the Trenches", based on an incedent that occured during the Christmas season of WWI between the British and German soldiers. I have a whole collection of New Age/Celtic Christmas stuff that I adore, but they're not medieval.... Gwen
