This was sent to me: Anyone who is interested, please contact me. All expenses will be paid for this program.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Are you a fit and competent horse rider, looking for your next challenge? Discovery is teaming up with Channel 4 in the UK to make a documentary about Medieval Jousting tournaments. We are looking for four men to come to 'knight school' in England, where they will learn to become a true knight! We will teach them how to joust in full armour, and fight with medieval swords . At the end of the training, the knights will face each other in a real jousting contest.

I recall a recent program on Discovery where they took a group of guys out of civilian life and chucked them into Roman Army style basic training. These people had to have no re-enactment or military experience as part of the entry criteria in order to get a fair equivalent to the skill/experience level of a new recruit.

I suspect the same sort of conditions would apply to the joust trainees.

Hi

My understanding is that re-enactors/Living History groups need not apply (.....yes, I did call them when I saw the ad. Wouldn't you?)

Bit of a downer - it seems they've arranged for these people to get trained by the interpretters at the Royal Armouries at Leeds, which would be most re-enactor's dream of a way to spend two weeks.

They don't especially want Medieval History buffs, either - don't know whether that's because they are going for the "man in the street", or because they don't want some smartass arguing about whether their program is historicallt accurate.

I would wager that they want folks that don't have any preconceived notions based on their amatuer or formal knowledge of medieval history, eastern martial arts techniques (which do get in the way of learning WMA if you aren't paying attention), etc... They want minds they can mould.

They have a program in mind and most likely don't want the schedule disrupted by "know it alls" who would no doubt try to point out "flaws" in the program. That would be rather annoying. We couldn't even bluff our way in, we know Andy.

Pity, I think it would be a grand time, though they are specifically looking for men, it would be cool to see the transformation.

I sent them my details when my wife gave me a copy of the advert. Although I have never jousted, and my equestrian activities span either side of the mediaeval period, I did think I may not be quite what they're after as Neil has now confirmed. Shame though, as a fortnight in the Armouries would have been top..!

next time then..!
