Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. I don't get the MOST e-mail of anyone I know, but...I'm always on the lookout for more medievally-related bulletin boards & e-mail lists. Will some of you share information on ones you've come across?

Aside from FS, I'm also on:

The 75years list (on Yahoogroups), focusing on the European Middle Ages from 1250 to 1325. Usually not a lot of traffic, but a high proportion of people really know what they're talking about.

The Tourney Companies list (on Topica), where discussion mainly centers around period fighting styles, fighting manuals, etc. Right now embroiled in a huge semi-organized discussion on period accounts of deeds of arms. Most members are SCA, but from the upper ranks of the dedicated and authentic.

The Armour Archive (www.armourarchive.org), which most here are familiar with. Populated by armourers, aspiring armourers, those interested in armour. Some are fools, but many lively discussions.

I was briefly on the h-costume list (@indra.com), which has a very high volume of activity, and discusses historical costume from all periods. (Interesting, but not a high proportion of medieval content.)

Can anyone suggest any others?

Anne

Lot of people here can also be found at the mailing list of the Company of st George:

cosg-living-history@yahoogroups.com

As far as I can see it is open for non-members, you just need a great interest for the late medieval period.

cheers

In addition to many of the "standard" forums (Arador Armour, Sword Forum International, Armour Archive) I also subscribe to the Arch-Metals email list. http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/arch-metals.html

It covers Archaeological Metalurgy of all sorts (ferris and non-ferris). The people on the list regularly offer insight into more obscure finds and the test results from those finds.

Although slightly out of the scope of this group, the best Anglo Saxon forum I have seen is on the Gesithas site http://www.gesithas.org.uk/gegaderung An english site, but lots of people from other countries.

I am also on the ancient tactics, phalanx, ancient weapons and the living history yahoo groups. Note that the last is not real LH, more reenactors group, most based in Oz. Still a lot of good stuff goes through.

One of my favorite clothing lists is a yahoo group, aotc. It stands for Age of the cotehardie, which is what the list was called before spammers took over and we had to move to a new address.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aotc/

It's non-SCA specific, though there are many SCAdians there. The volume of newcomers has been getting pretty high lately, asking somewhat basic questions, but the core group is very knowledgable. It's pretty well moderated to keep off topic, and blatantly farby content low.

Here is what I'm on.

Medieval Religion-Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture [Not as interesting as it sounds]

Soldados-mostly 18thcentury Spanish borderlands LH

TMR-The Medieval Review- Academic Medieval book reviews, which I always forget to read.

When I turned control of 75years over to Joris a few years ago I eventually turned if off but then turned it back on about a year ago but rarely read it with much diligence.

Keep track of the local Roman groups too.

From time to time I consider starting a really detailed like 1450-1500 group with just people who really read and study it especially people interested in doing immersion lh stuff. But starting lists is a pain. I learned that with 75years.

Martin, thank you for that great link. I went there and was able to understand quite a lot. They have much goings on and I may have to plan my trip to Germany this year around one or some of thier events. I am trying to learning German because of my Saxon heritage and hope to be able to communicate by the time I travel. Any way, enough rambling....
Danke

Hi Star Dancer,
nice to hear that it is useful.
Tempus-Vivit is the major German living history forum, there you find everything from 19th century to celtic, from extremly good groups to purely fun groups. Gives a good impression what is going on in Germany.

Well, for the heck of it I'll toss out the lists I'm on too... a kind of eclectic history mishmash when you get down to it. And thinking on it, gads, there's a lot of them!

Renaissance Military Society, doing Living History of the 1485-1603 period of Western Europe.

Sonora Jousting Internationals, which is for the California Jousting circuit

Kingdom of the West EQ list, since I go play horse stuff with them from time to time

Polish Hussars (Suligowski's Reg.), mostly the early stuff, i.e. 17th Century rather than Napoleonic era or later. Some fun cavalry discourse on occasion.

Republic of Texas, dealing with, you guessed it, the Republic of Texas, 1836-1846, a time and place that I am absolutely fascinated with.

US-Mexican War, again, it's straight forward

WWII Commonwealth AB list... yeah, I do that too from time to time, but I'm pretty much out of it now. Too many other things I'd rather do.

And some others I can't think of off hand!

Gordon
