During research into pavises (yet again) i hit a small wall in terms of info on English guilds. I am specifically looking for information on the painters guilds of 15th century England. I'm not really sure where to start. If any knows of any documents, i'd be very greatful.

(This is why i am looking for info on painters guilds and not shield makers)
(at least in Bohemia) painters and shield makers joined forces and became one large painters guild. This, i believe is due to the nature of the steps required in mixng the pigments and glues and such. Bringing it all uder one roof so to speak would make regulating the quality of such items easier.

He's been in Archeon for a week and just got home last night, so he needs some time to recover. That may be why you're experiencing "radio silence". He and I email nearly every day and I've not heard from him either, so give it a day or 2 before depair sets in.

Jorge is most certianly your man.

The Guild of Painter-Stainers is one of the Guild Companies of London and can be found and contacted at their Guildhall. Their records are kept in the Guildhall in London (rather than their private Hall) but in essence the guild of Painters (painters of heraldric devises e.g. shields etc.) and Stainers (painters on cloth .. i.e what we now call painters) were amalgamated into one Guild in the early C16th. Prior to that they were separate but Guild records show a degree of cross over between the two.

From memory the Letter Books of the City of London (which are now online) will have some references to the Guilds but I don't recall much detail on the actual techniques or materials I'm afraid.

As ever on the Artists ... Jorge really is the man.

Cheers
Dave

I haven't got fed up you cheeky pup.

As it happens I would have said ask Dave Key....re Guilds etc ;-)

As it happens I am anticipating a suggestion or two regarding guild banners eh Mr Key?? eh??

But if you want to share info on painting you have but to ask and anyhow I distinctly recall chatting to you about various media and colours some time ago, mind it may well have been prior to your email problems.

Colours and media are your easiest challenges, the construction and regulations if any etc are another kettle of fish.

Il libro del arte - Cennino de Cennini

The craftsman's Handbook - Andrea Cennino de Cennini - Dover. ed. DV Thompson

Recommended reading along with
Materials and techniques of medieval painting, Dover ed. DV Thompson.

Interesting but by no means definitive there are other treatises out there and not Italian ones either, eg Strasbourg Manuscript.

Need to chase up the Painter-Stainers myself to get their earlier arms and details. Got some refs. but I know there are alot more.

So much to do so little time.

I asked Peter Finer for some info ages back and he didn't even reply.

Mainly about the one he still has on sale.

Holiday Mr Key, Holiday, you haven't got time for that. And are you still up for next year's project?

Same here. As a matter of fact, I asked him about that very pavise you showed on the other thread. I've asked 3 times over the past 2 years...no response.

Ah well...

OT: The method of delivery really shouldn't matter. But, yes, the first few time, I used the form on the site. The last few times, I copied the address and sent it via regular email.

Snail mail is always an option.
