My housemate is working on putting together a Russian persona for SCA purposes, but wants to be as accurate as he can. He is looking at the Novgorod region roughly circa 1300, give or take a few decades (hasn't settled on a particular date yet), lower class/peasant. Does anyone have any recommendations of good resources (books, webpages, etc) for this time and region, especially info that would be useful for putting together kit? I think he already has some good info on history, and he has a limited ability to read modern Russian.

All of my resources are for England and northern Europe, and I'm not sure what the important differences are between locations.

TIA!

Nikki -

Your friend should check out the SCA's Slavic Interest Group and their mailing list.

If he is looking for an SCA name, point him at the Dictionary of Period Russian Names. If he wants a 14th century byname that indicates that he is from Novgorod, he could go with "Novgorodets."

I am unsure whether Compleat Anachronist #35, "An Introduction to Russian Costume," would be helpful, but it might have some useful patterns. You can order it from the Stock Clerk.

Other potentially useful online resources:

Some books to look for:

  • Novgorod in Focus: Selected Essays by H. Birnbaum
  • Chronicle of Novgorod, 1016-1471 by W.K. Hanak
  • Wooden Artefacts from Medieval Novgorod by B.A. Kolchin
  • Novgorod the Great: Excavations at the Medieval City by M.W. Thompson

Nikki, try this link Tozhe Forum. It's the central WEB Forum of reanactors in Russia. Not all of them study Russian history, but you can find some interesting contacts there. Feel free to write in English there.

Also, you can find some interesting information at site Tozhe Gorod. Unfortunaly all articles in it in Russian. Here are some materials on Russia: http://tgorod.ru/index.php?topgroupid=2&subgroupid=5&groupid=7

Sorry for my English

Respectfully yours,
Demyan.

Hopefully this isn't too late to be useful.

"Arms and Armour of the nomads of the great steppe in the times of the mongol expansion" by Witold Swietoslawski is a good little book, if you can get a copy. I think I got mine through abebooks.
