I was checking used book sellers and came across the following book.

De Bourgondiërs

It's by Richard Vaughan, from 1976. It's in Dutch. The seller says it covers 1384-1477. If this is one of the Vaughan books you guys mention, is it worth buying? I guess it would be the one about all the dukes? How hard is Dutch to translate?

You can translate Dutch if you have a good working knowledge of German and French, and a good Dutch-English dictionary. Good Luck!

Hi Sir Dan,

That would be the Dutch edition of 'Valois Burgundy' I believe, as it is his only title that covers the full span. The publishing date syncs being a year after the English edition. I'm pretty sure you can find the same title in English - much less aggravation.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the info. I have a decent understandinf German, took 3 years in high school. Chef - I have NOT been able to find ANY book by Vaughan on any seller site other than some book about medieval illness. So I thought this would be good to get, but if you think it's not wworth the trouble, I'll keep looking.

Thanks again!

I found 2 copies of Valios Burgundy this morning on www.addall.com/used. Don't always go for the author's last name (Vaughan, R; Richard Vaughan; R. Vaughan). Try Keywords: Valois; Valois Burgundy, Burgundy, etc... (there are a lot of things that turn up under Valois, though not all useful) or the known portion of the title. Also try an occasional misspelling.

Brent/Jenn -

Thanks for posting those findings! I will check them out and most likely order a copy. I really like books, my trouble is findting time to read them . This is however, a much better dilema than NOT having any to read!

Oops! Disregard the first one Sir Dan. It appears to be a 28 pg booklet on the Dukes of Burgundy rather than VALOIS BURGUNDY.

Looks like you have to go with the one from England.

Sorry

Jenn

Jenn,

Thanks for the warning! I caught that when I was ordering the book. I am a bit anal in buying books in that I always check the number of pages versus the price. I saw the 28 pages and thought, that can't be right. I only wish the books were in the states so I can get them faster. I should have that book by 04/30 I decided to also get the John the Fearless that Brent mentioned. It is in Australia and I have not even heard a confirmation yet.

Dan - who is keeping his fingers crossed...

Sorry about that. I normally do a double check as well. It wasn't the page count that caught me, it was the title, it sounded...wrong. I think you will enjoy Vaughan's books. They are usually peppered with contemporary accounts of courtiers and give you an insight into their personalities. If you can find it, get Philip the Good. Just keep checking with the various book engines, the Vaughan books tend to show up in spurts.

Enjoy!

Hi Sir Dan,

Not surprising. The way Vaughans book's sell, you would think they came complete with a winning lottery ticket and a solid gold cover. We have all of them, except Charles the Bold. Same thing happens to us all the time.

Hi Chef,

I am beginning to see what you mean about Vaughan books coming and going so quickly. It's frustrating, isn't it? I'll get one eventually if I keep at it, methinks. At least I was confirmed for the copy of Valois Burgundy I wanted.

What I tend to do, is if I know it is a book that moves swiftly, I order it immediately vs. inquire. I do this with the Vaughan books. Sometimes if you inquire, they sell it before they check the mail. So I click buy. They usually return with a message informing that it is unavailable or tell you that they will hold it for a week and will send it as soon as payment has been made.

Chef refers to Charles the Bold by Vaughan as my "holy Grail". lol

Jenn, thanksf or the advice. In the case of John the Fearless I have been doing that. That is, I have been ordering via email form the bookseller. But they are saying "already sold". For those books I do not inquire. I think what my new strategy will be is to order several copies at once, this way I have a better chance of securing one. ANd Ic an always say I'm no longer interested if I get more than one reply saying "it is available"

Whoo hoo!! Not only did I finallymanage to secure a copy of John the Fearless, the last one I saw listed, but my copy of Valois Burgundy arrived today from the UK. It only took a blistering 5 days to get here, I thought at least twice that long. I'm off to start reading.

Dan - who is doing the happy dance on the way to the couch

Hi Jenn,

Thanks for the title. I ordered a copy tonight. We'll see how it goes. I haven't been on the board for several days, just too busy. Now I'll have to "binge" and get cuaght up on things. Reading more of the Vaughan on Burgundy tonight.
