Well, an introduction, and a cry for resources, seems fitting...

My love in history is the 15th c., but the Wars of the period, though very interesting, aren't what captures my attention. It is the tournaments of the period that really grab my heart, and what I seek to be able to recreate. Though jousting is a bit beyond my confidence as a rider at the moment (though there is wistful planning and pipe dreams galore) I have been looking into the foot portions of the combats, as well as the pageantry of the events. I'm not looking into SCA-ish tournies (I do participate and enjoy what is done, being blessed with a group that is closer to living history than standard SCA, (we get similar treatment to what I've heard from LH people, but we're playing the same game, which makes it a bit... well... ironic.) That being said, it isn't quite my cup of tea. Too many times/places being done right is still history done wrong.) Anyways, a tournament that is much more period oriented (live steel, white harness, the gallery, you know the picture) and time frame specific is my goal.
My questions: what resources would you recommend I invest in? I'm always on the hunt for more info, (I got my credit card bill back recently... I didn't know you could spend that much on books in a month. )My preference is German, but any late 15th. tourney references would be appreciated. (Or places that I should start digging) Secondly, is there any groups out there that do similar? I keep hooking up with LH war units (which I need to get into someday soon. Just not enough people out here to get into it. ) but it's not what I am looking to do at the moment. Any groups you know of?

Thanks in advance for any references, tips, pointers, (kicks in the pants to do my own damn research )

Hi Alaric-

I'm confused- are you looking for book references, or referrals to other groups who do 15th C tourney-ing?

I'm confused because of your comments about your book engendered credit card bill! !!

Books would be an easy thing to cite, but finding groups who do "real" 15th C. tourneying will be more difficult. There are lots of guys who knock each other off of horses with long poles and call it jousting, but I don't know of any group in the US or Canada who does it as a spectator / spectacle sport with an emphasis on historical accuracy. In the UK, yes, but not here.

What area do you live in? There are schools for jousting in Oregon, Tennessee and several other places, though I can't personally attest to their value.

Haptfrau- My apologies. I can muddle sentences with the best of them. I'm currently looking for both books for scholarly reference and groups for recreational diversion, so my asking for both at the same time kinda confused the question. (It's one of those "I want everything!" kinda cries, isn't it? )

Peder- Yes, I have a copy of _Tournaments_, and do agree with you somewhat on the review. Thansk for the pointers on the other one's.

S. de Leon- I'm currently residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (A long way from most places, I'll admit. And further from anything that helps further my intrests, it seems, sometimes. )
