Hi, All --
I am at the beginning stages of planning a trip to Switzerland, Austria, and the Czech Republic for this coming summer.

Besides visiting friends and the occasional (hah!) castle, I hope to find at least one LH event that is open to the public in one of the countries.

Anything from a market day to a joust on a castle grounds would be welcome.

Any events you can tell me about would be greatly appreciated -- and will help me to plan where to go, and when.

Please post the info here -- I visit almost daily.

All the best --

Hi Kent,

I don't know if you're on the Company of Saint George list or not, but they would have a pretty good handle on what's in the area since they are in that neck of the woods.

Here's their website, which includes events. It's not overly comprehensive, so you may want to E-mail the contact & ask.

Kent, it may be worth your while asking the groups concerned if it's alright to take part - their insurance may not cover a non-member turning up to take part.

I see I should have been more specific.....

My wife and I are just going to Europe as tourists this summer. That's what I was talking about -- events where people in jeans and sunglasses, etc., can watch and meet the living history folks and learn a little.

We will not be taking along any medieval clothing or accoutrements this time.

Sorry if this was unclear!

Kent, in that case the answer is pretty much YES! There should be events throughout the summer.

I you find yourself anywhere in the vicinity of Castle Hallwyl in central Switzerland, you might want to pay the Company of Saint George a visit. We will be there from Friday 24th June until Sunday 26th June.
There is a certain chance that the program is extended to Thusday making it a full four day event.
The castle is worth seeing in itself, so if it is not too much of a detour I recommend a visit.
Cheers,
Alex

Thanks very much for the info -- I remember Hallwil very fondly from when I lived in Switzerland 45 years ago -- that's quite a lasting impression!

Unfortunately, we will not be able to leave on vacation until July -- right after the Co. of St.G. has packed up and returned to the 21st century.

Aaaaargh!

If any further possibilities exist for us to view a Medieval LH event in the aforementioned countries in July, please let me know.

Again, thanks to all who make this forum so interesting and informative

*bump*
Besides the CofSG, are there other folks out there, especially in Austria and Germany, who may be having events?

I have been checking the CofSG mail archives, and there's no mention of Hallwil coming up -- I may have to follow the suggestion of actually contacting the Co,. I guess!

In the meantime, does anybody else plan on an event in mid July?

Thanks, Danke, (and Merci and Grazie in honor of the Swiss)
