March 16-17, 2002
Re-enactment groups depicting soldiers and military encounters throughout history join forces with modern-day veterans and active units during this two-day event to demonstrate camp life, military tactics and weaponry. Jamestown Settlement, Williamsberg, VA 14th C - LaBelle Compagnie

Wolfes/Codpiece will be fielding 2 lances in full armor, 6 Men-at-arms and 2 archers.La Belle Looks to have a full complement with Sir Geoffrey (my great grandfather), several archers, a couple of Men-at-arms and some women of the household. Post-event Report: Sun & Rain.The event was actually quite good Saturday, but just as soon as we were set up to deal with the public Sunday - the drizzle began, Rain continued & moats developed. Our camp looked quite good & Steve did his usual fantastic job as camp cook.
Beef Olives, chicken in verjuice, roasted beef in fruit sauce, pork tartlets, nut mikado (sp), boiled garlic... All of us have livery coats/vests now, which looked great & helped a lot with the cold & rain
Sunday. We also got our MJ order-o-helms in last week. Quite nice, but they make them on the small side, so some alterations and/or exchanges are in order for some. It was good to have a bunch of helmets. We set them out for the kids to try on. Other Event activity - Warwick's had a big siege camp, with a cannon, mantlets,
pavaises, and a small treb. The treb was throwing acorn squash about 100 yards and was a big hit with the public. There was a new group doing polish lancers - they had the winged cuirasses with fancy brass trim and a cannon in camp. Some Landesknects were there. I'm surprised Jamie doesn't bring his group to MTA. There was a pirate camp (questionable as "Military" but extremely good with the kids), Saxons, Labelle, Vikings, and a 8th(?) Century group. No crusaders or Romans, which was disappointing. I didn't get to see the post-1600s groups, but who cares about them?  -------------------- Geoffrey Bourrette

Novae Militiae (the Knights Templar group) sent in our application this year, but we got rejected. Wendy called and they told us that there just wasn't enough room this year what with all the construction and all. What do you guys think? Was there less space available or were they just letting us down easy? A couple of folks thought that maybe they dumped us because of the post 9/11 era thoughts about "Crusaders".Steve -------------------- Forth Armoury

I've heard the post-9/11 theory about political correctness put forward as the reason you weren't invited. I'd hate to think it was true. But if it is, they will never admit it. IMHO, A crusader camp is no more politcally incorrect than having a bunch of WWII Germans. I doubt this applies to you guys, but it was announced that some groups were dis-invited for brandishing weapons at the public or some other safety infractions. Again, you guys are not the type to screw around like that. It's Jamestown's loss. You guys are a high-authenticity group that has it's sh*T together. The area where you probabally would have been camped was occupied by a farb dark-age group with their own in-camp timeline which included highly-authentic enameled bar-grilled 14th Century helms. Jamestown is an odd event. For instance - the whole judging thing is a real annoyance. The judges don't know much about your period, but they know what is modern. For instance - I had a piece of wood that was pressure-treated (greenish) that I didn't manage to get painted before the event, so they noted that, as well as a ink-stamp on the edge of another fellow's board. The ironic thing is that we were in direct sight of THEIR fort, which has a very greenish cast to it. When I went inside it, there was a whole gun deck of brand-new green 2x10s right there at the entrance. -------------------- Geoffrey Bourrette
