The Red Company will be at the "Age of Chivalry" Renaissance Faire in Las Vegas October 19-21.If anyone is going to be out this way and has appropriate kit you're welcome to join us. If you don't have appropriate kit we can probably scrape up some loaner stuff for you. Contact me at historic@pacbell.net. We'll be doing the usual dog and pony show, and it looks like we're adding the famous "History of the Wars of the Roses- Abbreviated" play. We're going to be fielding almost 20 people this time so we'll have 2 messes, and the best breakdown by class that we've been able to manage thus far. We can't bring Petrus to this event so we'll only have the 2 horses, but he'll be attending the spring event, so the Captain will have 2 horses! I imagine I'll have some good pictures to post the week after the event. Gwen

Well, we pull out in 30 minutes, just need to load the horses and the last minute gear. We'll talk to you all when we get back next week! Gwen PS- Bella really rates this trip! She got a shiney new chanfron, a new bit and new girth straps on her new saddle. The boss got himself 2 new pair of hose, a new sword (or maybe it was just a new scabbard and belt) and a set of bridle gauntlets from Mac. Some people have all the luck- I'll be lucky if I can scrounge up some clean socks........

I can't speak for everyone else, but I had a good time. The organizers didn't give us any shade like we asked for, but they did give us a water spigot in the middle of camp and we had a prominent location in the fair. Gwen and I didn't take hardly any pictures, so I'm not sure what we'll be able to post. Vegas isn't very scenic as fair sites go, so we don't concentrate our picture efforts there. Also, we're somewhat busy during the day and I never think to get the camera out. Highlights for me: "Progress" parade was enjoyable; got to show off Bella's new chamfron and saddle. Battle pageant was fun; with the new lighter blunted swords, I managed to keep from hitting the horses in the head. Gauntlets from Mac worked well, though since they're spring steel, they scratch my mild steel saddle steels and sword grips. Bill and I were the only horsemen in the battle. Last year there was a group of guys from the Excalibur, this year they were "Gladiators". Our group seems to have a lot more respect and notice from the English groups that do the "southern" faire. They invited us to one of their events. Did some armoured ground combat with bastard swords at end of day Sunday and still drew a crowd. Got a couple of new dents in my harness; steel swords will do that, and Bill hits a little harder than I'd like. Most fun- playing my bagpipe for the camp. Everybody seemed to enjoy it, especially Gwen. We have two musicians in the group, Geoffrey and Gordon, so it pleases me that they think I'm doing well. After only 6 weeks of practice (never having played a bagpipe before) I'm doing well and Gwen is glad we bought the instrument. Geoffrey, Gordon and I had a little jam session. Geoffrey on his guitarra, Gordon on the organetto (portative organ) and me on a nakir (small drum). I had a blast and want to do this more. Maybe I can convince them to get some LOUD instruments that would accompany my pipes?? Overall had a good time. [ 10-20-2001: Message edited by: hauptmann ]

I will suggest the bombarde (a type of shawm, still available today, as a suitable instrument - small, same fingering as other similar instruments (probably including your bagpipe, same basically as recorders, whistles, similar to transverse flutes), and very, very loud, definately able to compete with a bagpipe. The only difficulty is that the breath pressure needed to play it is difficult to maintain for long (or even moderate) periods....that's why much of the music for bombardes is for 2 players, so they can alternate throughout the song and get a chance to rest. Also, the double reed is somewhat...challenging to keep in tune, especially when playing with other instruments

We're starting to put photos from the event up as they come in. There's 5 there now (thanks to Steve and Sylvia Lund) and I'll bump this thread as Jeff adds new ones. One of the things you can see pretty well in the combat photos is the new bit for Bella that Jeff made. http://www.historicenterprises.com/redco/aoc01.html Gwen Captions for the photos, Top, Left to Right: Rubin and Katherine try to tear Adam's limbs off. Goodwife Joan (called the terrier) seething funges. Captain Tristan, Brother Geoffrey and Orlandino play music for the amusement of all. Bottom, Left and Right The Captain and Coustillier Wilhelm spar for the bloodthirsty crowd. [ 10-26-2001: Message edited by: Ginevra ]
