***The Wars of the Roses returns to*** ***Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center!***On May 3-6, 2001, the Wars of the Roses will return to Bates Nut Farm for our 3rd annual reenactment, with the theme of "The Aftermath of Tewkesbury". You are cordially invited to join the followers of Richard, Duke of Gloucester as we celebrate our victory over the forces of Lancaster near the town of Tewkesbury! SCENARIO We've marched from nearly one end of England to the other chasing the forces of the Lancastrian Queen Margaret of Anjou at Tewkesbury. Though we've seen some losses to our numbers and injuries to our bodies, our spirits are high owing to our unquestioned victory over the "foreign witch". We now know that our efforts to assist Yorkist King Edward IV regain his throne have been worth our labors, and we expect a healthy paycheck in the ensuing weeks. In the interim, we're still drilling, shooting, drinking and gambling to keep our skills sharp for the next battle. PUBLIC INFORMATION The public is invited to tour the camps up close on Saturday, May 5th, 2001 between 10 AM and 4 PM only. The public may view the activities from the sidelines (outside the ropes) at any time on the other days, but will only be permitted into the camps at the discretion of the event organizers. Last year we were visited by about 300 members of the public on Saturday. INFO FOR PARTICIPANTS (reenactors):
- The site opens at 9am on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 for reenactor setup.
- Reenactment begins at Sunset that same day and ends at Sunrise Monday, May 7, 2001.
- Participants are required to dress in clothing appropriate to the scenario and during all hours of the event. All other kit, tentage, etc. must be appropriate for the scenario of the event.
- The site closes on Monday, May 7, 2001 at 5PM.
- The Red Company pays the bills for the event by hosting homeshool tours on Friday between the hours of 10AM and 4PM. Members of other groups are welcome to participate in the tours, but participation is not mandatory.
- Please note: This is an invitation only event. If you have received our email event notification directly from historic@pacbell.net, you've been invited. If you have not received our email announcement or got it secondhand, please contact the organizers to register.
- The site is 8 miles from Escondido, and 3 miles from Valley Center, with a Valley Center address. It is surrounded on one side by a mostly unpopulated Indian Reservation, a sparsely populated mountainside on the other side and a horse ranch and cultivated farmland on the ends.

Well, we're down to T-6 days and counting.I've purchased all the staples and most of the meats, which are safely stowed in the freezer. Lists have been checked and double checked for everything else. All of the props for "The History of the Wars of the Roses - Abridged" have been purchased. I have to confirm some things today- snack bar, insurance certif., cases of veggies from the produce guy, etc. I get to bundle all of the loaner blankets and pillows into a "fardell"....it just looks like acanvas wrapped bundle tied with rope to me. I purchased the fish last night, and begin smoking it all (25# of salmon and a few cute little pacific dolphin fish for effect) for breakfasts. My medieval mortar and pestle arrived yesterday!!!!! Thanks Jamie!!!!! Everybody says they have their clothes ready (whew!) I get to see my Nice Twin ™ in 6 days! I'm so psyched!!!!!! Gwen

Thanks to Jeff, Gwen and the Red Company for hosting a really fine & enjoyable event, this last weekend.I offer my appologies for the archers behaving in a somewhat "insular" way---sometimes we drop into that mode, without any ill intent. Some of our personal/professional lives have been pretty rocky lately, and I think our energy level was reflective of that. It was great seeing the folks who had traveled a long way, especially the two 1490's guys from North Carolina. When I saw the excellent work that Jamie did on the pair of hosen he was wearing, it made me want to go home and throw my sewing machine in the trash and take up stamp collecting . -------------------- Tim Finkas (aka Henri le Brassey) The Company of Yeoman Archers The Historical Forgerie

I'd also like to congratulate everyone (especially Gwen and Jeff and the rest of the Red Co) on a well run event. I would also like to piont out that it did NOT snow or hail or even rain, so none of that at previous events was my fault obviously!! I really enjoyed meeting everyone as well, especially all those folks who I've been chatting with here on firestryker. I must admit it was a bit odd to have total "strangers" call me AM right off the bat.... anyway, way fun!! looking forward to seeing some of you again at Pennsic!!! --Anne-Marie, a bit sunburned but with the firescale finally scrubbed out of her cuticles... -------------------- "Let Good Come of It"
