I dont know if this is correct, but heres how I did mine. I coiled a thin "rope" of linen, wraped it with white cloth, then took a narrow strip of green cloth, and wrapped it round the white, and tied it off, leting the streamers hang down. I'd use osterich plumes or peacock feathers....Otto

is this a personal thing? or have you found this to be historical in any way? as a wat note, i would see it as maybe a hinderence. extra weight to the helm, an easy point for someone to grab, a sword might not have the glancing effect cause it would hit it etc.

whatya think?

Hi All,

Yes, this is a decoration seen in Continental art of the mid to late 15th century on some helmets, most commonly in the art of what we would consider to be Germany now. There is a wonderful Swedish St. George altarpiece, made in celebration of a victory over the Danes (Kalamar?), that is incredibly detailed, that shows the saint with a slightly looser decoration like this, with a broach pinned to it, and feathers sticking out of the broach.

Well cloth bands be they with various colors twisted or decorated with feathers, you can find on several helmets. Especially if they are from the south wst of Germany and Switzerland. Examples you can find in the Swiss-chronicles, the "Hofämterspiel" from the 1460´s, the "Chronik des Konstanzer Konzils" from Ulrich Riechenthal from the 1450´s, also in the Housebook-master there are plenty of examples, also in the cheaper version know as "Venus and Mars" but that version is not complete.
But I haven´t seen this kind of helmet decoration in other countries.
