Hi,

I have made new pattern for a german sallet but i'm not sure if it's an historical shape of German sallet. My new pattern is more like a big ''Bell'' than other sallets.

What is your feeling about this shape of helm? It is an historical shape? Do you think it is too large on the top of the helm?

Thanks for your help

François

I like it. It seems all to often there is not enough "bell". This may have a little more than usualy seen on existing salets, but to my eye it looks within the limits...

Hi larcheveque,

It is very impressive and inspiring to see such a crop of raised helmets recently, this fine example, and Eric Dube's lovely kettlehat. I think the bell, or what I refer to as the skull bulge is within limits, the tail length itself might be slightly excessive. Both elements are seen in 15th century German sallets, but I am not sure I have seen that legth of tail, with that size of bulge.

I think the elements you have here are believable in a reconstruction, it not being an exact copy of an existing helmet. We have such a small sample of surviving 15th century armours - when compared with the armourers output - that variations such as this would seem to my eye to be quite believable.

It is not "cartoony", it looks very impressive, and I am sure were I the maker, or the eventual owner of it, I would be quite happy with the result.

Keep up the good work guys!

Hi Wolfe,

"Yes, with a but" - you will note the sallet you reference does not have the skull bulge that this reconstruction does. I think it's within the realm of the possible, I just don't recall seeing the two features so prominently combined. Then again, I do not concentrate on the study of German harness at the end of the 15th century.

I should reiterate, it's a magnificent hat, and were it mine, I would be very pleased with it.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your comments, your help is really appreciated. Me, this is the only sallet i saw with the two features:

http://cf.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/francoislarcheveque/detail?.dir=5d93&.dnm=4062.jpg&.src=ph

But i have changed the curve of the tail for a more straight curve.

Finally, i have never saw a sallet like this and unfortunately, i like this new pattern.
