I'm having a arming cote made and would like to make some voiders (also known as gussets) of mail made to protect the insides of my elbows and armpits. What shape wehre tehy made? is it simply a rectangle that goes up the side of the body through the armpit and down the sleeve or is it more comples than that. Any information and/or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

(No pics available at the moment, 'cuz I'm out of town.) I like to use two pieces on each arm. Your configuration may vary, dependent on what your armor does (or doesn't) cover.

The first is essentially a section of maile shirt with short sleeves. It covers under the arm pit and across the chest to about 3 inches from the center of the chest. It's switched to the doublet along the edges, ecxept for the sleeve, as the plate arms need to slide inder it to be attached to the arming doublet. (seen in a lot of Italian art)

The second voider is a 10" square swiched in at the inside of the elbow.

Ar the moment, I have a bit of mail also swiched to the collar of my armong doublet, but that's going to be replaced with a seprate mail collar.
