Hello all,
I recall reading a post about the use of linen tallow being used for the padding of helms. Was that here?
If so, was there a particular method of stuffing the liner (i.e. making small balls out of the linen ala Price)?

Linen tallow ??
- Tallow is the rendered fat from animals eg. cattle.
- Linen is a vegetable fabric
So I'm not entirely sure what is being suggested with "linen tallow" ... maybe they are referring to "tow".

"Tow" is the waste by product of linen manufacture and is what cotton-wool is to cotton cloth ... basically the loose fibres.

Certainly tow was used in the making of Jacks (i.e. padded linen armour) if Dominic mancini is to be believed writing about the soldiers of Richard of Glocester in 1480.

Somewhere (probably in an old thread on this forum) there is a discussion about helmet linings ... so have a dig around ... but linen cloth stuffed with tow would be likely ... tallow would be disgusting!
