Hello!

I have viewed your boards for quite sometime now and have usualy found my answers without having to post. (which is nice considering I always have ALOT of questions!!)

But I have run into a problem I hope Ya'll can help me out.

I've just about completed my first greathelm, and am wondering how to make the chinstrap, or the means of securing the helm over a coif, cap and rolled pad.
I tried this qestion on the AA, but no one has responded.

can anyone part with a bit of wisdom for a newcomer?

Thanks in advance!!

Did greathelms even HAVE chinstraps? The big-ole-bucket touches or practically touches the shoulders, so I can't envision being able to buckle it.

Thanks for the response! As big as they are, you don't want it twisting on your head when you get hit!(bad for seeing afterwards, not to mention the nose)

If you could, I don't currently have any resources other than the net at present.

Any suggestions would be immensely appreciated!!

I have no idea if this is even remotely period but this is what we use for Greathelms etc.

Drill two pairs of holes, one on each side of your helm at about ear level. Through one set of these holes run a long lace with a leather chin piece, pass the other end of the lace out through the other set of holes, pull tight and tie in a bow. You can tighten the chin strap as much as you like, it is easy to undo and if you get into a world of hurt the lace can be cut or undone on the side of your helm without people reaching under you chin.

We use this method because it is easy and holds the helm securely whilst jousting, nothing worse than a helm moving while on a horse when a guy with a big stick is trying to hit you. And if we do end up on the ground it is easy for the paramedics to get our helms off

Again I have no idea if this is a period method and I won't even try to justify it.

Sir Rodric,

Thanks for the information. If it isn't period, it should have been. Just by the explanation the rig sounds very well suited for that particular helm!

Looked at your site, your armor is phenomenal! Jousting,? I’d get killed!! Looks like fun though.

Short of someone coming up with a better way, this sounds the best so far

Again thanks

Just plain old Rod is fine, Roderick is actually my real name though I usually use Rodney for obvious reasons.

You are more than welcome
