I'm having a coat armor made after the Charles VI preserved at Chartres. The shell will be linen but I'm looking for options regarding the covering. While the original is silk brocade that may not fit my budget and I wonder if wool, plain silk, or silk velvet would be appropriate/ justifiable for use on such a garment? Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave,

Fustian was considered a nicer sort of cloth, that is not as expensive as brocade or silk, which would be inappropriate unless portraying someone in the middleing ranks of the arristocracy, or the upper middle class (depending on country). It was a nice enough material that you see it cropping up in inventories of knightly families.

There is a place on the web that has real linen warp/cotton weft fustisan, for @ $5 a yard.

Thanks Bob,

I can't believe I didn't think of fustian. It should be ideal for they way I intend to use this garment. The best price I've found on line so far is $9/yrd from Ghost Forge. Do you recall the name of the $5/yrd place by any chance?

Which weave would be the best choice? I was going to ask this same question.
