Hi, everyone.
I'm attempting to sew a tabard, such as the Knights are wearing in Rene d'Anjou's treatise (pg. 182-3 of Barber & Barker's 'Tournaments')...

or in this pic.

First off, is 'tabard' the correct term? Secondly, can anyone tell me how it's put together; I can't see any sort of opening in which to put it on. The artist seems to have omitted any seams/ openings.

Here's a pic of a tabard of the Herald of Burgundy, but I really don't think it's designed the same; the ones the knights are wearing are far more fitted around the torso.

I'd really appreciate any help you could give me. I have to make one for an event this weekend, and I don't have time to make any mistakes!

Thanks............Greyholt

P.S. Ok, fixed the links...

I can't view it. I will have to take a look-see in my Tournaments book when I get home.

Ah the joys of YAHOO.

This, sans hairstyle , is basically the look I'm going for.

Pretty spiffy, if I can pull it off!

Hi Greyholt,

That is most definitely a Tabard - correct term for correct heraldic garment. What seperates it from a livery is that it sports the individuals arms rather than a lords badge - marking his property and retinue.

The only surviving ones are a late 15th century French example held in a Russian collection, which is indeed a tabard, but cut more like a huke (it was never intended to be form fitting), and this very late 15th or early 16th century example in Vienna, which dates to the reign of Maximilian. Neither fasten to give the form fit in the Rene book.

That said, the Rene pictures illustrate the most commonly illustrated style, and we have no reason to believe they are made up. I have seen speculation that they go over the head like a poncho, and lace at the sides.

Other people with expertise in clothing could probably give you a better idea as to construction and fastening.

Hi Chef!

Yeah, the poncho idea is the conclusion I came to also. Unless someone comes up with a better/ more accurate design in the next few hours, I guess I'll have to follow that route...

Thanks...........Greyholt
