I'm trying to put together an order for custom made tin plated steel brigandine nails. The nails will have a low dome head about 1/4" in diameter with 8 radiating raised lines on the head. The shafts would be 14ga. by 1/2" long with a diamond point on the end of the shaft.

This nail is based on the nails commonly used in 15th century Italian brigandines. NOTES: Radiating raised lines were very common on 15th and early 16th century brigandine nails. It was also very common for the nails and brigandine plates to be tinned. The reason for the 1/2" length of the shaft is that it's the shortest nail that the nail manufacturer can make. The point on the end of the shaft lets you push the nail through fabric without damaging the fabric.

The minimum order for custom nails that I need to buy is 100 pounds. With the tin plating the nails will be about $18 a pound plus shipping. If you don't want the nails plated they would be about $16 a pound plus shipping. I'm looking for people that want to buy at least 5 pounds of nails. Just so that we're clear on this I'm not looking to make a profit selling these nails. I'm trying to buy 30 pounds of nails for brigandines that members of the Company of the Wolfe Argent plan on making and I need to find people who would be interested in buying the other 70 pounds of nails.

Yes, how many pounds? We are looking into at least one, perhaps two brigs. We want the waisted type that Montecristo posted pics of a week ago that go past your grotsch, rather than the high-waisted type as shown in Edge & Paddocks' pikeman. I was planning on using brass round-head rivets, as the modern nail thing is sounding too cheesy, and I have someone to make the plates. I was going to use elk for the outside, being the closest thing to red deer, but probably lining the thing with canvas or flax linen.

Based on the size and length I would think that there would be about 700 to 800 in a pound.

Peder:

The brigandine I'm currently working on will have about 1500 nails in it when I'm done.

Just slightly off-topic - brigs were commonly covered with fabric - not leather! The nails that Craig is talking about will be made to specification, which means that they will be based on the research that Craig has done with the help of actual surviving brigandine nails and plates and the help of extensive book research. They will be the most acurate thing since the real thing! - If anybody is interested in getting brigandine nails that are custom made for the sole purpose of being brigandine nails, then this is the oppertunity!

Pieter.

I'd be in for a few pounds. A brig is on my "By next spring" list. One of the Wolfesco guys is also planning a brig.

I received the 2nd set of sample nails yesterday. The nails weigh on average 8.66 gains each (7000 gains to a pound) so there are about 800 in a pound. The shaft is .4" long and heads are between .220" and .250" in diameter. The shafts fit nicely into a 7/64" (.109") hole.

Here is a photo of the nails heads: http://www.eskimo.com/~cwn/tmp/brig_nails.jpg

Please email me with the your shipping address and I'll let you know what the total cost will be. Also please let me know if you want to back out of the order so I can let people on the waiting list know.

Hello

I was wondering if anybody had any nails that they might be interested in selling or if anybody has any suggestion for obtaining good alternatives.

Thanks

I appreciate this was four years ago, but is there any new interest in making another such order?

I might be interested in being part of a new order if it's the only way I can get hold of any. I was hoping that somebody might not have used their's or that several people might have smaller amounts left that I could amalgamate to get enough for a brigandine.
