While rummaging through some of my boxes of books, I came across one the other day that I hadn't looked at in quite a while. I was wondering what, if any, opinions you all had about it.
"The Armourer and His Craft, from the XIth to the XVI Century" by Charles Ffoulkes
It's a 1988 reprint of the original 1912 book. He seems to cite some good original sources. Just wanted to get someone elses opinion.

Hi Alasdair -

Foullkes is a mixed bag - most of his information regarding armour itself is very dated (check out his section on "maille" as an example). That said, there is some great useful information not readily found elsewhere - most notably in the apendices. He prints in full a rare document on the arming process in the 15th c. (and it is not the one most commonly seen in print, although it has a similar title). He has a useful list of armourers and where & when they practised their art, and also a useful list of armourers marks. As a rule though, check out any information on actual armour itself against better & more recent works on the subject.

Hope this helps.

ffoulkes is also the only really handy source for documents concerning the processes of armor manufacture - inventories and purchase records, lists of tools, etc. It is still a morass of difficult-to-interpret information, and ffoulkes' conclusions aren't always accurate, but there is a lot there to ponder.

Thanks all for the feedback. When I originally purchased the book about 6 years ago, I did so on the basis of the tool/equipment lists, and the appendices in the back. I am glad to hear that I wasn't misled in these areas.
