im looking for burgundian/french kettle hat photos to base one off of for some "not so stressed on period stick fighting" that I do.

Ive seen the HE burgundian kettle hat with the top fluteing and have pondered a way of doing that in 14 guage steel. to date the only way I could come up with for it to be fairly easy would be cut and weld. any suggestions would be appriciated and Pictures would be cherished.

Hi Samuel,

That particular 'hat' is in the MET in their regular armour display. I have a couple of pictures in my collection from different angles, and I will post them tonight if I can find them.

As to how to go about building it - I'm not an armourer, so I don't have the foggiest notion. I would think that so many welds as one for each facet of the helmwt would be a bod thing - that many more welds to possibly fail. perhaps if you did it in two halves you could use some sort of dobble to form the bowl - but what do I know?

Good luck in your endevour. I'll try to post those tonight.

I've made this helmet, mine was in 16 gauge. It involved a complex weldment and lots of raising, all of which I did hot. I can't explain all the details about how to do it, but I'm confident it could be done in 14 ga, but don't believe it would be suited to any of the "combat" groups, even with a bevor.

Hi all,

here's a side view of the Burgundian fluted kettle hat in the MET.

It clearly shows how deep the brim is on this example.

Ouch. I'd make the top bowl and brim independently, and do the top as two halves, because I don't have the equipment for hot work. I'd put the top seam along the front and back center flutes, and do all the other flurtes before welding up the halves.
I think getting the brim shaped correctly would be almost as hard as fighting with no peripheral vision. You could mount the bevor to the top, and put a mostly-hidden bargrille inside the brim...
