I have been going through my unfortunately limited amount of books on armour, and have not yet been able to find any consistant style types of armour that would be Flemish in style. There are obvious differences in 15th C. Italian and German armour that set them apart, however there seems to be no obvious hard examples of Flemish armour, even though Flemish and Burgundian armour are mentioned in various (though vaguely)books, distinctively seperate from the commonly found Italian import armour worn in the low countries and commonly illustrated in period paintings. Ghent was apparently one of the the centres of Flemish armour production, so there was obvious indigenous Flemish armour production, apart from the immegration of Italian armourers into the low countries. There are obvious examples of Italian export armour made for the Burgundian market, but what did Flemish armour look like? On page 116 of "Arms and Armour of the Medieval Knight." there is picture of a tomb effigy of a Flemish/Burgundian noble sir Dierick Van Der Merwede - but is this flemish armour? In the painting of St. George and the dragon by the Flemish artist, Friederich Herlin St. George is obvioulsy wearing Italian armour. So the big question that poor old ignorant me is looking for is: What makes Flemish armour of the 15th C. (1460-80) distinctive from Italian or German armour? Are there any surviving amourer marked examples? What is typical of Flemish armour? Where can I find any books, writing, photographs or illustrations of Felmish armour? I am admitting to a total lack or access of information! Please can anyone help me??!!

Looks like Bob has answered this question pretty thoroughly, so you won't have to wait for Jeff to answer-
