I believe today marks the day Charles the Bold was found dead (and frozen) after his defeat during his siege of the city of Nancy.

Thus ending the reign of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy.

Charles has been recognized as being instrumental is changing the structure of an army. Specifically, he dispensed with a medieval army led by individuals chosen by social class, and restructured it to be led by individuals of experience and by hire. Thus the beginning of what is considered a "professional" or modern army.
