It is one of those cases where you don't realize how easy it is to get your basic beginners kit together until you've actually done it. From the outside even this 'simple' process is pretty daunting! (As I am writing this I am realizing how little I know what I'm talking about, even though I have my basic clothing ready, I haven't a clue what gear needs I'd have to conform to at an actual encampment... what food, shelter, and sleep gear requirements; and I'm still very shaky on the details of developing a portrayal that will fit in.... just to name a few concerns).OK- let’s be specific for the benefit of everyone, since there seems to be more than a few people who are interested in this info:
To participate with the Red Company at your first event, which I believe will be the Age of Chivalry Renfarce in October-
KIT
Clothing: 2/Shirts, 2/ Braies, 1 or more hose, 1 or more doublets, shoes, hat, belt, pouch, all of appropriate materials, design and manufacture. Optional: utility knife, hood, coat. As a recruit, you’ll have access to the company loaner equipment for any clothing or kit items you need, and you’ll be able to borrow Company livery, a helmet and weaponry, if necessary.
FOOD
Most of the RedCo. buy into my mess, which means you pay about $6 per day for 3 meals and drinks. I cook, you’ll be expected to pitch in as far as hauling water and trash, washing dishes and doing camp chores. You BYOB. If you can’t live without chocolate or some other prohibited substance, you’ll have to bring it yourself and eat it in the secrecy of your tent. We discourage you from eating it anywhere where the public can see you too, although we’ve all been known to have an ice cream cone in public.
SHELTER
If you have a tent of appropriate style, you’re welcome to bring and use it, like Grey does. If you don’t have anything appropriate, you make arrangements for tent space in one of the Company tents. Expect to pay a small transportation fee ($10) for the use of Company tent space.
BEDDING
Make yourself a bedroll that you’re happy with, and as long as the yellow ducky fuzzy blanket is covered by a wool blanket, we don’t care what’s underneath. Most of the guys use sleeping bags with a wool blanket top. If you use a pillow, make sure the cover is plain white. If you have an appropriate bed, go ahead and use it, and if you’d like plans for a simple slat bed, we have one. If you’re a single guy you’re not allowed a bed, but married couples are.
PORTRAYAL
As we’re discussing off list, you need a name, place of origin and story about why you’re with the Red Company. You’ve expressed interest in being an artillery man, and that’s fine. We have guns to loan until you can get one of your own. Try to think of a plausible reason why you’re with the Red Company, instead of home doing what you were before you came to us. You have a wife, so what happened to your home? Was there some reason you couldn’t earn a living doing what you were before? As a married guy I feel you need a bit more of a story- Gunner's story is that he's a career soldier, and that's fine because he doesn't have a wife to explain. I think the assumption with a wife is "why don't you have some other career or job, why do you have to be a soldier?". Lone wolves require less of a portrayal story than nice transient married couples.
That's not to say you need to write a book, just look at what the other couples in the group have come up with.
MUSIC
I see no reason why you can’t be a musician along with whatever else you’re doing. I see plenty of pictures of shepherds playing instruments, so music doesn’t belong to any special social class, although I’d suggest playing a class appropriate instrument. Maybe you’re a shepherd who’s looking for a leg up in the world.
Johann and Dyderich are both using RedCo. service as a way to make money, and Hugo is using service as a way to recoup his losses with his tavern.
Gotta go to work now, hope this helps!
