Jeff and I carry a nominal SCA membership so we get the member merchant discount at Pennsic. This membership entitles us to the "Kingdom" newsletter.

This month's issue (in addition to cover art depicting the current Royals as cartoon superheroes) contained information for the upcoming "Collegium". For the uninitiated, "Collegium" is the SCA version of school. Usually held over a weekend at an educational institution with classrooms, a full range of classes are offered in a variety of subjects.

The list of courses for this particular session is separated by category. It should have been no suprise to see 4 classes in the "History" category (ranging from Astrolabe 101" to "The Heritage, History and Folklore of the Celts") to a whopping 18 in the "Society Skills" category. Offerings ranged from "Agh! A Pointy hat!", and "So you want to be an Autocrat" to "Branch Seneschal basics".

Fascinating.

I should point out that not all Collegium like objects are the same. Much depends on who volunteers to teach and the vision (or lack thereof) of the organizing bodies....often Collegiums end up as soapboxes for folks determined to save the universe. "I'm surrounded by wankers! it must be an education problem. I'll teach a class!" *sigh*.

anyway, up here, collegiums (which are called "ithras", which means Excellence in arabic, I'm told....) tend to be the more hands on practical medieval stuff. Pewter casting in soapstone molds. Period dying. Construction of medieval rosaries. Bookbinding using medieval techniques. Surveys of costume/needlework/etc using primary source material.

it all depends on who's in charge .

--Anne-Marie, who in addition to doing 15th century re-enactment is also an Ithra Chancellor, ie sets up classes for SCA people and so gets to dictate what is available. bwah hah hah!
