Hi there!

I am in search for good paintings of pilgrims with their staff (15th cent. of course). on the ones i found, its hard to recognize details about the staff, what material the decoration is, etc.

does anybody of you have something for me here?

thanks a lot

Off top of head.

Certain details are specific to pilgrimage, eg Compostella pilgrims had the scallop shell.

Red knops on the staves seemed common.

Anyway

thanks for your reply!
i already searched google, but on none of the pics is a hint of what material the knob/rings are. or the shell for that matter
wood? brass? if they are red, i think painted wood...

at least the lenght of the staff can be guessed on most pics.

red? hmmm...

No because like most original pics do not explain the make up of things. However a dead pilgrim dug up in England a couple of years ago had a wooden stick with a knop, which was part of the stick and it appeared to be dyed red. With what, I do not recall but Brazil is a good dyestuff and red paint is also readily available.

Your best bet is to get a reliable book which has done the leg work, ie reading up the various tracts etc.

Good luck and don't forget to post it up.

i just ordered the book you recommended from amazon

well, i hoped for a painting with a high enough photorealistic quality to help in guessing
those black and white pencil like drawings do give a hint on the shape, but nothing more.

thanks a lot for your help! at least i have a starting point now!
