Hi All,

In my quest for authenticity, I am trying to determine what kind of headwear a Knight of Banneret level in the 14th century might wear. And, where I can get it.

Gwen has a lot of very nice 15c hats, and I already have a woolen hood, but what might the middle level knight wear?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I would like to know this as well. I am trying to portray a minor knight and would like to wear something other than a hood/coif. I am doing the later half of the 14th century.

For any late C14th knight may I suggest a rolled lirapipe hood. It can be rolled in any variety of ways- some of which are even practical. A button front hood also makes it easier to adjust the tension on it and even allows some of the cool turban styles to be achieved. Other than that there are the "robin hood" style felt hats in a variety of styles the odd bowler hat style (which may be of beaver) and towards the very end of the century you have the bag hat and even some practical wide brimmed hats appearing. For formal occasions you really cant go past a good circlet for a knight.
cheers

Here's a hat I noticed in the Romance of Alexander, Bodleian 264, 57 Recto.

See http://image.ox.ac.uk/show?collection=bodleian&manuscript=msbodl264
for the full ms.

I've not studied this hat at all, so I'm not sure if there's any meaning, class usage, etc. associated with it. Is anybody else more familiar with it? Really, it looks kind of like an Errol Flynn hat.

Lisa made me a Fleming-style hat that I have been wearing. It looks nice especially with one of the pewter livery badges. But I am not completely sure that it would have been worn by an English knight in 1356.

On a similar topic, anyone know where Mike Loades bought the "white hart" livery badge that he was wearing on his hat in that deplorable "documentary" "Tournament - Making of a Medieval Knight"? My wife's standard is the stag and I would like to get one like that for her (preferably in silver).
