I found another very good use for pattens this weekend, I am sure it has been used elsewhere but I found it very handy.

I used it for darning my hosen. I had a very nice hole that had developed in both of my hosen and found that sewing in the patches was difficult. I put the patten inside the hosen and it was much easier. It freed up both hands and allowed me to make some bends in the patch when necessary.

Neato!

In modern darning circles, they use an egg-shaped piece of wood called a "darning ball" to accomplish the same purpose. But I have no doubt that many things could be put into hose to achieve this end.

How do you keep the mud that's caked on your pattens from getting inside your hose? Or am I still reliving last weekend's event...

Obviously I had a severe brain cramp when I wrote that message.

I should have said I found another use for a shoe last. My wife just pointed out my error, obviously she does the thinking in this relationship.

I'm sure pattens can be used in the same basic manner, if the pattens are properly constructed. Just a matter of getting it into the hose leg.
