I'll start by saying hello to all.

I'm trying to be acurate in my hand work techniques for hemming simple garments like my shirts and Boksten style tunics. The wrists and bottom are no problem, but as for the neck line I have been using a facing and then turning it to the inside and then whip stitching it down to the body. Is this correct for mid the14th century, or is the facing just an extra step when I should just use a rolled hem?

Thanks -

Munz

Textiles and Clothing 1150-1450 (in the Finds from Medieval Excavations in London series from the Museum of London) discusses facings in necklines of some extant medieval English garments; some of that information can also be found at 14th Century Sewing & Textile Information.

I'm not entirely sure what technique was used on the Bocksten tunic, but from this picture, it looks kind of like it is just hemmed, rather than having a facing.

Thank you very much. I picked up a copy of "Fabrics and Textiles" this weekend and answered my own question before I had a chance to check back this morning. I'll have to make something this week to try it out.
