Topic: Anyone know this clothing book?

Hi;A friend has gushingly recommended a book called "Medieval costume in England and France, the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries" by Mary G Houston. However, said friend has the historical rigourousness of a plate of cabbage, and a tendency towards the "Here's the one book that tells you everything you need to know about XYZ" school of research, so I don't want to buy it only to find I've forked out for a "costume book" rather than anything more serious. Anybody else know this book, and if so, how is it? Thanks Neil

Well, It's difficult for me to gush about a small book that covers such a wide period of time, but I can tell you that I recommend it wholeheartedly and often as being a very general guide to the period. The information is correct, although the small size means the author of necessity misses a good bit. She bases her information on period artwork, and all the redraws are clearly captioned.
Unlike Norris, there isn't anything completely incorrect thrown in with the facts to cause confusion or to mislead the uninformed.Although it will never replace "Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince" or any of the MOL books when it comes to scholarly research, I recommend the book for its factual overview of clothing of the period and as a solid investment (it sells here in the US for under $10) for beginners. I also find it very useful for guys who are heavy on the military stuff but a bit light on the clothing end of research, as it gives a good amount of info in a condensed format, and has enough pictures to illustrate the text. I think of it as the Osprey Book of costuming, with illos by Gerry E, not Angus MacBride.  Hope that helps! Gwen
