I'm looking for good sources for late 12th/early 13th century hats in the Lower Saxony and Bavarian regions of Germany. I haven't had much success searching online and at barnesandnoble.com for secondary/terciary sources to use as ideas/patterns/etc.

Hi.

I have just discovered this forum and I would like to add some aspects. According to "der Paradisgarten der Herrad von Landsberg (Hortus deliciarum)", which was written approx. 1170 and the very famous book "liber ad honorem augusti", which was written in the late 12. century, hatfashion was noch as common as in the 13. cent.Apart from a very few coifs ,hoods and a special kind of hat (with a pointed top ), which is presumed to worn only by jewish people, hardly any pictures of headgear can been seen.

A hat, which it quite often shown in "liber ...." has a phrybian helmet shape. But I doupt ,that this was a widespread headgear in 12. cent. medieval Germany, because the book describes the south Italy campain of Heinrich II. So it might be that this special kind of hat is likely only an italien fashion.

Hope you are able to understand my german accent;-)

Ingo
