Hey everyone, I'm going to be making a late 13th century clothing belt soon, but can't seem to find info on the length. I know it should be the circumference of my waist plus some, but now long is the "some"?
Any primary sources that I should look at?

BTW, my portrayal is a Northern Italian merchant, circa 1300.

Thanks,
Dan

"Some" is just as long as you like it and as long as your persona could afford to pay for. It seems that a lot of miniatures show very long belt ends, especially for noble women. But they had the money to pay for such a long belt AND were not hindered by it because they didn't move around much and had long dresses.

For the militiaman you want to portray, I wouldn't go too long. Firstly you wouldn't be able to pay for a very long belt, but secondly and most importantly, a very long belt would hinder your movement too much.

I would go for an extra length of about 30 cm maximum.
Since you are that common militiaman, don't overdo on the fittings and such. A simple buckle and belt tip and perhaps a few fittings.

Thanks Joris, I can always depend on your for a good answer . I finished the belt and have a few pics of it here. http://saverio4444.tripod.com/current_kit.html
The extra length is about 12 inches (30 cm). I used a bronze buckle from Historic Enterprises and red brass sheet for the tip and plate.
