hello Rhys, off of the top of my head in present day italy, i have seen pictoral evidence for split hose until about 1460 that is probably too early of a date for it to be phased out but i would like err in the side of caution than to say that they were used well into a time period that they were not. examples that i can think of are in Piero dela Francesca frecoes of The Miricle of the True Cross ca. 1450-60. there is also a detail that i have from one of Pisanello's works that show two hanged men 'cept i can't rmember a date on it. but for earlier stuff, the cassones have good details of split hoses aswell. hmmmm. i just remembered a painting by Filipino with split hose.
i remember coming across some german refernces ca. 1470 'cept that is purely from memory and cannot date them certainly. i could go through what i have from Durer and that could date it as far as into the 1500's. most likely it would be associated with peasentry.
i remember seeing both french and flemish examples but i never bothered to date them.
concidering that the joined hose was a developement of the split hose, would i be offbase in saying that the split hose was used universally throughout most parts of western europe and slowly phased out with the advent and popularity of the joined hose with cod piece, with pockets here and there that ignored fashion continueing the use of the split hose, namely some lower classes and peasantry.
i too would be interested in finding more evidence in the use of split hose and also an acurate historical pattern.
by the by, what time frame and location are you interested in?
daniel
